Deep Breaths

They say the human body can survive for weeks without consuming food, a few days without drinking water, but what about breathing fresh air?

In this issue I invite you on a journey to discover the healing power of yoga breathing. Find out why correct breathing  makes a difference and watch a short video showing you simple breathing techniques to invigorate and detoxify your body, clear your mind and increases your vitality.

A more intense method that promises accellerated detoxification using a combination of breathing, postures and heat is Bikram Yoga. But how healthy can it be to exercise for such a long time in a heated environment? I've decided to do some research into this question and share my thoughts with you so you can decide for yourself whether it's for you.

And if yoga is your thing, then be sure to enter our Lucky Draw this month for a chance to win FREE yoga classes at Wasabi Yoga & Wellness Studio, a DELUXE Yoga Kit or a What Therapy VIP Card which entitles you to one FREE trial yoga class with Colleen Simmonds.

Have a great day and remember to breathe!

Bikram Yoga - Detoxifying or Dangerous?

Bikram Yoga also known as "hot yoga" is a relatively new branch of yoga named after its founder Bikram Choudhury and practiced in a room kept at a temperature of 40C. A typical class will last 90 minutes during which students are led through 26 yoga postures and breathing exercises.

Having been to several hot yoga classes since I started to practice yoga, my experience has been very positive on the whole as I emerged feeling like I'd just spring cleaned my body. And for good reasons, the combination of

According to The Center on Ageing Studies at the University of Missouri, as we age, our breathing tends to become more shallow, leading to poor oxygen supply to the body's organs, respiratory disease, sluggishness and heart disease. Regular breathing exercises are therefore necessary to counteract this process.

Whilst the importance of breathing correctly is a relatively new  discovery in the West, in the Eastern traditions the knowledge that steady, focused breathing has tremendous health benefits on the body-mind-spirit levels has been well-established for millenia, e.g. yoga breathing in India, Qi Gong in China. Yoga breathing (or Pranayama) is one of the Five Principles of Yoga and is practiced in four stages...

Maternity & Family Yoga  Colleen Simmonds - FREE Trial Yoga Class

Colleen believes that Yoga is a wonderful way to heal existing problems and maintain good health. Colleen’s intention is to introduce the student to her body. This may seem strange, but so many people do not realize how tense they are and how damaging this can be to their health. Learning to relax the body through stretch movements has a profound effect on their attitude to themselves, others and their environment.

What Therapy VIP Card Members enjoy one FREE Trial Maternity or Family Yoga Class at Costa Rhu or Four Trimesters with Colleen Simmonds.
